Chocques Military Cemetery grave 1.j.100.

Enos Esau Sherwood born 21st February 1887 in Godshill, near Fordingbridge in Hampshire, son of Henry and Annie Sherwood and was married to Sarah Jeff in 1907 in Lymington, Hampshire.

Enos served in 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment and was a Private, his service number was 23237.

Enos enlisted in Brockenhurst into the Hampshire Regiment in April 1915 where he joined the 1st Battalion in Ypres. This unit appears on his medal roll and on the Commonwealth war grave entry for him.

There are some unanswered questions as Enos is recorded as dying of wounds on 1st September 1916 which would be when his Battalion was serving in the Ypres Salient. It is not known exactly when he was wounded, however he would have been taken back to one of the base hospitals behind Poperinge.

Enos is burried in Chocques military cemetery grave 1.j.100.

It is said that Enos would have been treated at No 1 Casualty Clearing Station which was located in Chocques. The majority of burials from this period are of the casualties that died at the clearing station from wounds which were received at the Bethune front, not at Ypres which would be miles away to the north and had its own line of casualty treatment and evacuation.
