William Scott born abt 1877 in Thorney Hill, Bransgore and his parents were George Scott and Elizabeth Jeff. William married Mary Barnsby of Mudeford Green, Christchurch in 1913.

William was a Sergeant and his service number was 39807, he served in the Royal Field Artillery.

It is believed in around 1910 William enlisted in Croydon into the Royal Regiment before the war.

William was part of the 18-pdr Field Artillery Battery arriving in France on 18th August 1914 as part of 3rd division. He moved towards Mons where he found himself immediately involved with his battery in a retreat. He was involved in the battles of the Marne and the Alsne and moved up into the Armentieres and Ypres sector.

William was awarded the 1914 star (in 1917) often referred to as the ‘Mons Star’ and clasp (in 1919) indicating he had been under fire between 5th August and 22nd December 1914.

He and his battery would have been involved in the second battles of Ypres. William progressed into being a Sergeant and in 1916 was serving on the Somme.

On the 13th November the 3rd division attacked Serre. The ground was said to be wet and muddy and the weather cold and misty, an attack came to and on the 15th the Germans initiated a heavy gas attack mixed with high explosive shells.

William was killed in action on the 15th November 1916 aged 29 years old. His body was sent back for burial in Euston Road Cemetery, Colin Camps.

He is buried in grave 1.e.9.
