Burt Doe (Snr)

W.W.2.
1881 to 22nd October 1918

Bert Doe was the son of Francis John Doe and Louise Smith. He was born in Hampshire and lived in Thorney Hill, Bransgore. He married Ellen Lakey in June 1916 in Christchurch and they resided in Thorney Hill Bransgore.

Bert was a Private in the Labour Corps, his service number was 630102 where he served in France and his previous service number was 202439 where he was a Private in the Hampshire Regiment.

Bert became extremely unwell when he was serving and was transferred to the Winchester Military Union Hospital; he died of pneumonia, which was said to be complications of Influenza on 22nd October 1918.

Bert received both the Victory and the British War Medals and is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves at St. Paul’s Churchyard East Boldre and is mentioned on the memorial there, he should also of had his name repeated on the village Hall Memorial, however it is thought that possibly due to a typo error this did not occur.
