Samuel was born about 1898 in Thorney Hill, Bransgore. He was not actually known as Samuel, but rather George. He was the son of Stephen Gilbert Cooper and Ellen. George enlisted into the Army at Brockenhurst, Hampshire on 6th June 1916. He was originally placed in the army reserve and was called up on 6th October. He turned 18 years old and was then posted to B Company, 1st Battalion in France.

7th April 1917 the Hampshires and 11th Brigade moved towards Arras, 9th April, which was an Easter Monday they were in position ready for attack, there was a heavy snowstorm that day and the battle of Arras started. It was stated that it was a successful day and many prisoners were captured. However as night fell snow and sleet made it almost impossible to move forward, fell snow and sleet made it almost impossible to move forward, communications were affected and the troops were finding it tough.

There was a counter attack that happened that evening and the Hampshire’s were able to beat off a counter-attack that evening, it was an aggressive attack and due to this there were reported to be 60 casualties. Sadly George was one of those 60 casualties and died in action that evening. George was buried by his regiment. His grave is 1.B.14.
